The importance of Lokbharti was enhanced, just after the establishment of the institute, by the inspirational visit of the then President of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad. In 1964, Dr. Zakir Hussain, Vice-President of India, referred in his National broadcast that…his faith in Nai Talim education system has been restored after his visit to Lokbharti.
Lokbharti, the first of its kind and a model replicated later on by other 22 Gramvidyapiths and 500 Lokshalas (Nai Talim based secondary and higher secondary schools) in Gujarat, has achieved notable success through its life-oriented village-centric education by preparing devoted students, leading to rural upliftment and sustainable development and reducing migration to cities.
Lokbharti-Lokseva Mahavidyalaya, a rural faculty affiliated to Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University having an autonomous status for nearly 40 years from UGC and accredited with ‘A’ Grade by NAAC, has proved that Nai Talim is effective and successful from primary to higher education system. The salient features of present educational system recommended by Delor’s Report under the title ‘Learning: The Treasure Within’ such as…Grade System, community life, internal evaluation, self-evaluation, education co-related with society through activities which are connected with experience and feeling, life-oriented education, mother tongue as the medium of instruction etc. have been already incorporated here since beginning 1953.
Lokbharti, the only NGO in India, has become a role model by inventing LOK-1 variety of wheat, which has been at the first rank in production among other varieties of our country since 1981. LOK-1 is sown in 30 lakh hectors in 16 states of India, earning crores of rupees for farmers and contributing a lot in green revolution and food security of our nation.
Lokbharti has given due importance to the conservation and improvement of the Gir cow breed progeny in surrounding villages which contributed a lot in strengthening the quality of local breed of cows.
We have come out with an exemplary contribution at state as well as national level in the fields of propagating awareness among the students and community, regarding scientific temper, appropriate technology, renewable source of energy and rural technology, conservation and protection of natural resources, energy saving, water harvesting, adult-education, organic farming, forestation etc. through Community Science Centre.
Lokbharti has been successful in ushering the dawn of the White Revolution and the Green Revolution among the surrounding villages. We have been providing extension services in the agriculture, animal husbandry, horticulture and the like fields since the establishment of the institute. Our continuous efforts have affected the livelihood and life style of the villagers to such an extent that the mental outlook and approach of those people have been remarkably changed. At present these types of extension services have been strengthen with the establishment of Krishi Vigyan Kendra.
Numerous articles, study reports, books, Reviews, Ph.D. Thesis are published and Documentary Films including Mark Tully from BBC, Radio Talks, Public Lectures, Seminars, Exhibitions and Drama Performances have been organized during last six decades’ long pilgrimage of Lokbharti’s three fundamental pillars: education, research and extension work.
The alumni students of Lokbharti have been honoured with many awards for their outstanding contribution at state as well as national levels in the fields of education, literature, fine art, social service, science, public administration, agriculture and animal husbandry, horticulture, forest, military-services, politics and various public and private sectors.
Inspite of having self discipline and simple life style of accepting khadi and productive manual labour as the strict code of conduct, we experience a great rush of the students for admission against the available seats here, every year. It also simply proves the importance of our education system.
